In the series, despite his ennui in the whole child welfare milieu, Nick is as vigorous representing his child clients as he is representing his corporate ones. The theme song was "Empire in My Mind" performed by The Wallflowers. Farrah Fawcett appeared in several episodes as a troubled single mom and love interest of Burton Fallin. Lolita Davidovich appeared in several episodes as a social welfare advocate and love interest of Alvin Masterson. The show was set in Pittsburgh, PA, and was filmed in the city from time to time.
